The basic goal of the Health Programme in SEWA Delhi is to decrease expenditure on health care by strengthening public service linkages, promote health and well-being by providing access to information and health education and in the process, improve accountability of health care services. The programme lays stress on health education at the preventive level, which is given the name, “Jagriti”, and has received the participation of over 1500 women. As part of these sessions, women members as well as adolescent girls are made aware about the causes of diseases and educated about home-remedies which they can easily opt for.

Social Determinants Factors such as income, gender dynamics, housing and living conditions - determine an individual’s likelihood of being healthy. Evidence both within SEWA and in the public health domain indicates that health cannot be wholly improved without addressing its underlying factors. Water and sanitation programs, for example, are essential to address the predominant burden of diarrheal disease amongst the urban poor.  SEWA addresses the determinants of ill health, the “causes of the causes” through its core livelihood and income generation programs, microfinance services and housing initiatives.
